ABSTRACT

Dynamic compression plates [DCP] and screws fixation were used successfully for correction of severe malocclusion due to congenital maxillary brachygnathia in a colt. The plates were fitted after bilateral osteotomies of the nasal branches of thepremaxilla

ABSTRACT

Thirty animals [17 cows and 13 buffalos] with traumatic reticulo- peritonitis [TRP] and pericarditis [TP] and 10 apparently healthy animals [5 cows and 5 buffalos] [control group] were included in the present study. In cases suspected to have traumatic reticulo- pericarditis, ultrasonography and pericardiocentesis for pericardial fluid analysis were evaluated as ancillary diagnostic aids. The obtained findings were discussed. It was concluded that ultrasonography was the most safe, useful, reliable and confirmatory aid in the diagnosis of traumatic reticulo-peritonitis and pericarditis. Pericardiocentesis should also be considered as the last invasive diagnostic index

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between thyroid function and some macro- and micro elements in goats. Fourteen Egyptian goat kids of different ages [4-45 days] suffering from congenital goiter were operated [hemithyroidectomy] throughout a period of four years [1995-1999]. Serum constituent levels of Triiodothyronine [T3], Thyroxine [T4], Thyroid-Stimulating hormone [TSH], Protein-bound iodine [PBI], Calcium, inorganic phosphorus, magnesium, iron, copper, Zinc, Cobalt and Selenium were estimated in affected Kids and their dams preand post the operation. There was a significant decrease in serum concentrations of T3, T4, TSH, PBI, Zinc, Cobalt and selenium, while magnesium and copper levels showed a significant increase in affected kids' dams. There was significant decrease in serum concentrations of T4, TSH, PBI, Zinc, Cobalt and Selenium while T3, magnesium and copper values were significantly increased in kids with hypothyroidism. No significant change was observed in calcium, inorganic phosphorus and iron levels neither in goitrous kids nor their dams. Ten days post thyroidectomy, the mean serum concentrations of T3, T4 and PBI were significantly increased while TSH decreased significantly in the affected kids. There was slight hypocalcaemia, depression of magnesium and copper near to normal levels while the mean zinc level was increased but not significantly. Cobalt and Selenium showed no improvement post operation. Daily examination, revealed complete resolution of clinical signs especially thyroid enlargement in 11 out of 14 kids within 2 weeks after the operation. It is possible to say that deficiency of cobalt and selenium in dams may play a role to cause congenital goiter in their kids and that the homeostasis of magnesium, copper and zinc is altered during hypothyroidism. Also it can be said that the hemithyroidectomy can be followed as a therapeutic surgical procedure in goat kids suffering from the disease

ABSTRACT

Guttural pouch [GP] tympanites and empyema were diagnosed in twelve animals [nine horses and three donkeys] with respiratory stridor and tympanic swelling in the parotid region. The diagnosis was based upon the anamnesis, clinical findings, paracentesis and radiographic and bacteriologic examination. Two fillies with GP tympanites were treated by using long-term implantation of an indwelling catheter through the pharyngeal orifice. Seven horses and three donkeys with GP empyema were managed by hyovertebrotomy with ventral drainage approach. The follow-up information revealed that one filly had persistent tympany; one donkey died of pneumonia and the other animals recovered completely within three weeks

ABSTRACT

Clinical, radiographic, biochemical and pathologic features of osteodystrophia fibrosa were described in 9 native Egyptian goats of different ages [0.5-3 years]. The affected animals were suffering mainly from being off-food together with a visible bilateral, soft, nonpainful swelling of the maxilla and /or m and ible. Radiography of the affected goats revealed generalized loss of bone density involving both cortical and cancellous bone tissue, with thin cortices. Widespread areas of rarefaction particularly in the m and ible were present. Serum biochemical evaluation showed increased alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase [ALT], aspartate aminotransferase [AST], urea and creatinine with low calcium and phosphorus levels. Osteodystrophia fibrosa was confirmed histologically

ABSTRACT

The pessimistic results of excision of chronic olecranon bursitis in buffalos were a debating matter. This article assigned an improved technique for avoidance of infection, wound breakdown and ulceration which might occur postoperatively. The surgical technique was ameliorated by lateral placement of the skin incision and the use of grooved rubber drain
